EDR tells you something looks wrong. MDR adds people who look at those alerts, decide what is real and take the first response steps, so a small IT team or MSP does not have to triage everything itself.
The trade-off is cost and control. MDR is a service on top of the tool, and the decisions about a client's systems are made by someone else's team.
